Have a Mardi Gras state of mind...
For those of you who do not know, I’m a Louisiana girl and Mardi Gras is my favorite time of year.
Yes, it’s wild. No there’s no control… and that’s kind of the best part!
Learning to let go of what you cannot control and just go with the flow… it doesn’t come easy to a lot of us, but it can bring you surprising benefits.
While a lot of what I write about is controlling things, anticipating hidden rules and following little details in order to achieve your goal, but what I urge you to do today is to take a step back, appreciate who you are and how far you’ve come! Enjoy the present, enjoy the ride.
You’re not defined by being pre-vet, and once you are a vet, that will not define you either!!
Lessons learned at Mardi Gras:
1. Roads are closed and the route you want to take may not be open.
Sometimes there are “Impromptu Parades”. Sometimes there are cops shutting down streets so a parade can line up. Sometimes there’s just traffic.
Lesson: Often your “route” to Vet School may not be direct. You may plan to go to your in-state school. You may plan to start Vet School after your last undergrad semester.
And sometimes it just doesn’t work that way! Sometimes you just get stuck in traffic!
Best way to deal with it: Turn your car off, get out, and enjoy the bands. Throw your arms up and catch something- you may as well enjoy the detour until you can get back on your route.
2. You will be meeting lots of strangers with lots to say.
Sometimes these people seem random, sometimes they may say something, some little nugget, that may change your life.
Yesterday, I stood next to a great-grandmother with toilet sunglasses on, as I had my 4 year old on my shoulders. At first, I didn’t think much would be in common between us. But then I handed her an extra roll of Tuck’s Toilet Paper and BAM… we’re friends!
Lesson:
Be nice and friendly, and you never know what you may get out of it! Go the extra mile for a stranger- help a fellow student by sharing a study tip, walk a client’s dog out to the car, and you never know how they might bless you: a compliment you needed to hear, a recommendation, a fellow study tip!
3. Cherish the moment.
Often Mardi Gras is a real pain.
But it’s worth it.
Be with your friends. Truly enjoy them.
Throw on a wig and get out there.
Enjoy the weather, enjoy your friends, don’t be in a rush to get on to the next thing.
