Fine print. Everyone’s enemy. Especially when you are applying to more than one Vet School. They all have their own fine print and their own cracks!
Keeping my Mentorship students from falling into these cracks is one of the things I pride myself most in!
Today, I’m going to outline some of the things that immediately eliminate applications from ever being seen by human eyeballs!
1. Minimum GPAs
You can read alllll about this in my previous post, “Which Vet Schools Do I Apply to?”. The majority of vet schools have a minimum of 3.0. That means your Total GPA (all classes you have ever ever taken at any university) must average to be 3.0 or higher.
*If your university is on the quarter system, how you find you GPA is different. Most GPA calculators will teach you how to do this, and VMCAS has their explanation as well.
2. Half of the Vet Schools out there will NOT accept a C- in a Prerequisite!
Do your due diligence and check the website of each vet school you are applying to.
Google “Western Vet School requirements” or similar. You’ll see this eventually near the Prerequisite Courses.
3. Prerequisites have an expiration date!
Each school has different (or no) expiration date on their Prerequisite Courses. Most are 10 years. Most of you reading this are in the midst of a 4 year Undergrad Career. But not all! Many of my students are “Second Occupation” Applicants. If you took Biology 101 ten years before application, you should retake it now! Find an online school, a Community College, anywhere!
If you cannot retake it, reach out to the vet schools you apply to and let them know. LSU for instance, will overlook this rule if you have proven to take other upper level sciences recently. The trick is to communicate with them prior to sending in your application!
Some schools have a 6 year Expiration! Watch out for Kansas and Long Island!!!
4. Prerequisites that you scored a D or F: Must retake
This is true for most vet schools. I don’t think St. Matthews, Ross, or St. George cares about this rule, but the rest do.
If you got a D or lower in a course, you must retake it. (As stated above, there are some schools that require you to retake it if C- or lower.)
If you need to retake a class, you do NOT have to take it at the University/College you too it at initially. Take it where you will get an A.
